Lesson 12

Is It Necessary *** Develop Toarism?

Text

A Little Good Will Can Help People Understand Each Other
Today we had an USAn family, the Rob***sons, f*** Sunday d******r.
The man is *** Ch***a on a jo***t project with the depart***nt where Mum w***ks. They w***k *** the sa*** off***e and as Mum knows a ***ttle Eng***sh she often ***terpretes f*** him ***o, so they ***t *** know each other very well.
He had often express*** his wish of ***et***g her family, but Mum hardly dar*** *** ******te him *** our old slum of a place. Now that.we've mov*** *** our ***w apart***nt we h**e a m***e *** less presentable place *** enterta*** him and his family. Granny was the o***y o*** who had any misgi***ngs about h*****g "highnos*** f***eig***rs" *** our house.

They ca*** about twelve - Mr. & Mrs. Rob***son and their two young d***ghters about Xiao Hong's age. Mrs. Rob***son g**e Mum a bunch of fresh flowers, br***g***g ***lour, fresh***ss and their ***od will. Mum did the ***troduction and it was left *** ourselves *** get *** know each other. As was natural Xiao Hong soon ***t on very well with the two girls Judy and Annie. They all had a ***mmon love f*** Xiao Hong's ***ttle kitten and they had endless fun with it.

Mrs. Rob***son was much younger than her husband, but she was friendly and k***dly and knows a ***ttle Ch***ese. There was a mo***nt of embarrass***nt when Granny ask*** her age. Mum was about *** apologize when Mrs. Rob***son l***gh*** and said it was quite all right, that she had been here long enough *** know it was the Ch***ese cus***m. She quite blandly ***ld us that she was thirty-two, almost twenty years her husband's juni***. When they lear***d that Mum was almost ten years her seni***, they were genu***ely surpris***, f*** Mum does look quite young. "No wonder you are so ***od and experienc*** at your w***k. I had thought you were fresh from . ***llege! " Mr. Rob***son said, perhaps a ***ttle flatter***gly.

And of ***urse they th***oughly enjoy*** the d******r. Iike a perfect Ch***ese hostess Mum and especially Granny kept stuff***g them with food and urg***g them *** eat and *** dr***k, apologiz***g all the ti*** that "it's-all very ***ager and ***arse fare. " The Rob***sons, on the other hand, were loud *** their praises and protestations. "We us*** *** hear about Ch***ese hospita***ty and now we know what it's really ***ke. How can you describe such a l**ish ***al as ***ager and ***arse? Any hostess *** the West would be proud of such a feast ***stead of apologiz***g f*** it," Mrs. Rob***son said *** Mum.

"And another th***g we don't do *** the West is *** urge the guests *** eat and dr***k," Mr. Rob***son add***. "With so much ***od th***gs bef***e *** I certa***ly don't ****** any urg***g. The problem is rather how *** prevent myself from over-eat***g! But back at ho*** I often had *** ask f*** a se***nd help***g and my hostess would feel flatter*** that I ***uld want m***e of her stuff. Here you don't even give *** a chance *** ask f***,m***e!" We all burst out l***gh***g at that.

When they rose *** le**e they thank*** us profusely not o***y f***'the excellent d******r, but f*** gi***ng them such a n***e ti***. "Li***ng *** Friendship.Hotel isn't really ******ng *** Ch***a. Today we feel we are really *** Ch***a. We' ve learnt much m***e about the Ch***ese people and Ch***ese way of ***fe ***day than half a year *** the Friendship Hotel. You must all ****** *** ****** us o*** day. Or better still, ****** and see us *** the States on day. "

Judy and Annie were reluctant *** ***. They made Xiao Hong promise *** ****** them at Friendship Hotel, tel***ng her not *** f***get br***g***g the kitten with her! They ***sist*** on gi***ng everyo*** of us a hug and a kiss, wh***h quite embarrass*** ***. I th***k Granny was really ***uch*** when they kiss*** her. All her misgi***ngs had been dispell***.
It' s surpris***g how a ***ttle ***od will on both sides can break language and cu***ural barriers.

II. Read
Read the follow***g passages. Under****** the imp***tant ***ewpo***ts while read***g.

l. The Tourist Trade ***ntributes Absolutely Noth***g
*** Increas***g Understand***g between Nations
The ***urist trade is boom***g. With all this cem***g and ******g, you'd expect greater understand***g *** develop between the nations of the w***ld. Not a bit of it! Superb systems of ***mmun***ation by air, sea and land make it possible f*** us *** ****** each other's ***untries at a moderate ***st. What was once the "grand ***ur", reserv*** f*** o***y the very r***h, is now with*** everybody's grasp. The package ***ur and charter*** f***ghts are not *** be s***er*** at. Modern tr**ellers enjoy a level of ***mf***t wh***h the l***ds and ladies on grand ***urs *** the old days ***uldn't h**e drea***d of. But what's the sense of this mass exchange of populations if the nations of the w***ld rema*** bas***ally ign***ant of each other?

Many ***urist ***ganizations are directly responsible f*** this state of affairs. They de***berately set out *** protect their c***ents from ***o much ***ntact with the local population. The modern ***urist leads a ***sset***, she***er*** ***fe. He ***ves at ***ternational hotels, where he eats his ***ternational food and.sips his ***ternational dr***k while he gazes at the natives from a distance. ***nduct*** ***urs *** places of ***terest are carefully cens******. The ***urist is allow*** *** see ***ily what the ***ganizers want him *** see and no m***e.

A str***t sch***ule makes it impossible f*** the ***urist *** wander off on his own ~ and anyway, language is always a barrier, so he is o***y ***o happy *** be protect*** *** this way. At its very w***st, this leads *** a ***w and hideous k***d of ***lonisation. The sum***r quarters of the ***habitants of the cite univer***air are temp***arily re-estab***sh*** on the island of ***rfu. Blackpool is recreat*** at T***remo***nos where the tr**eller ***es not *** eat'paella, but fish and chips.

The sad th***g about this ***uation is that it leads *** the persistence of national stereotypes. We don't see the people of other nations as they really are, but as we h**e been brought up *** be***eve they are. You can test this f*** yourself. Take five nationa***ties, say, French, German, Eng***sh, USAn and Ita***an. Now *** your m***d, match them with these five adjectives: mus***al, am***ous, ***ld, p***ant***, naive. Far from pro***d***g us with any ***sight ****** the national characterist***s of the people just ***ntio***d, these adjectives actually act as barriers.

So when you set out on your, tr**els, the o***y characterist***s you not***e are those wh***h ***nfirm your pre***nceptions. You ****** away with the highly un***ig***al and ***a***urate impression that, say, "Anglo-Saxons are hypocriies" *** that "Lat*** peoples ***ut a lot", You o***y h**e *** make a few f***eign friends *** understand how absurd and harmful national stereotypes are. But how can you make f***eign friends when the ***urist trade does its best *** prevent you?
Carri*** *** an extre***, stereotypes can be po***ively dangerous. Wild ge***ra***sations stir up racial hatr*** and b***nd us *** the bas*** facthow. trite it soundsl -that all people are human. We are all similar *** each other and at the sa*** ti*** all unique.

2. Le*****g with a Love of Ch***a

Very soon I will be le*****g Ch***a. I am well aware that three and a half years is not enough ti*** *** "understand" Ch***a. But I want *** express my appreciation f*** what has been a marvellous experience, made even r***her bec***se I w***k*** f*** the ***al Industry M***istry at Shandong M******g ***llege, first at J***an, and f*** the past 2 1/2 years at Tai'an. Li***ng on campus *** the small city of Tai'an,at the foot of Taishan, was a pri***lege. It g**e *** a ***ew of Ch***a wh***h can ***ver be aff***d*** *** those who ***ve *** Beij***g *** Shanghai *** any large city. After all, Beij***g is not Ch***a, any m***e than New Y***k City is the Unit*** States.

Of ***urse there h**e been hardships, frustrations and diff***u***ies. But that,s ***fe, anywhere.
The ***urtesy, ***nsideration and friend******ss wh***h h**e been extend*** *** ***, daily, are precious and last***g. I h**e tr**el*** over much of Ch***a. Most of all, m***e than all the antiquities, battlefields, sce***ry, ***al m***es, fac***ries, temples, operas, and the rest, it is the Ch***ese people who captur*** my heart - s***cere, warm, ***cr***ibly ***dustrious, unsophist***at***, and capable of deeper, truer friendship than most Wester***rs can even imag***e.

I h**e been wel******d ****** the ho***s of many Ch***ese. I h**e friends from 3 *** 83, peasants, w***kers, profess***s, doc***rs, ***oks, drivers. I h**e known people as they suffer and struggle and l***gh and weep and argue and h**e fun - ***ke all human be***gs. I h**e always tri*** not *** "look through USAn eyes", but *** see Ch***ese as people.

I suggest *** those shallow e***tists who.can't ***ve without their ***lf "exercise", that they ****** *** Tai'an and carry 100 pounds of ce***nt on a ***ulder pole up the 7, 000 steps of Taishan. Wonderful exercise, and you can earn 2 yuan a day. Those who ***mpla*** about Yransp***tation diff***u***ies of any k***d can watch the lao taitai-the old ladies with bound feet - who walk from their ***llages and make the arduous ascent of Taishan, cheerful and spry. Or ride a bus *** any Ch***ese city at the rush hour, as the Ch***ese must do every day. (Or any USAn city; *** deal with a Manhattan cabbie. ) And those who ***mpla*** of the bure***cracy ***uld try ******g *** the Social Security Adm***istration *** the US when you are o*** of the po*** and powerless.

I hope *** ****** back *** Ch***a so*** day. But. no matter what, I will ***ver lose what I,ve been given here.
My thanks *** all Ch***ese f*** ***w***g *** a ***w, higher standard of strength of character and k***d***ss. And my thanks part***ularly *** the people of Shandong M******g ***llege f*** their u***imit***, unst***t*** lo***ng care.

3. Yunnan Makes Eff***ts *** Boost Tourism

Start***g from scratch, ***urism *** Yunnan Pro***nce has made progress by leaps and bounds *** the last decade. O***y 1, 284 f***eign ***urists went there *** 1978, the year when the pro***ncial ***urism bure*** was estab***sh***. The figure rose *** 121, 300 *** 1988 - an **erage annual ***crease of 25. 4 per cent, said deputy bure*** chief Miao Kuihe *** an ***ter***ew .

In the pro***ncial capital of Kunm***g alo***, there are 11 posh hotels, with a***ommodations chiefly f*** f***eign ***urists, and n***e tr**el agencies that pro***de ser***ces f*** them. There are also 10 arts and crafts s***res *** Kunm***g with a variety of art***les with exot*** fl**ours, ***clud***g national ***stu***s of the m******ities.
In such a ***rt ti***, ***urism has assert*** its role *** the socio-e***nom***
develop***nt of the pro***nce.
In Kunm***g, ***urism has pro***d*** jobs f*** 12, 000 people. In the whole pro***nce 25, 000 people w***k *** ***urist depart***nts.

Tourism has help*** *** promote the cater***g trade, transp***tation ser***ce and ***m***rce of Kunm***g. It has help*** *** a***elerate the city ***nstruction and its embel***sh***nt. M***eover, ***ntact with ***urists from afar has wide***d the h***izons of the locals, deputy direc***r of the mun***ipal ***urism bure*** Peng Shaoxi said.
It has be****** a ***nsensus of local ***th***ities that ***urism is a vanguard ndustry *** open***g the pro***nce *** the outside w***ld;it is of trateg*** imp***tance *** e***nom*** develop***nt, and it represents the ***ientation of urban ***nstruction. In 1988, the pro***ncial ***vern***nt ***st*** ***urism as the sixth ***dustry ***.imp***tance *** e***nom*** develop***nt, said deputy bure*** chief Miao.

Now, 29 of Yunnan's mun***ipa***ties and ***unties are made open *** f***eig***rs, a fact f**ourable *** ***urism.
Bec***se of Yunnan' s abundant ***urist resources, Miao en***sions still brighter prospects f*** the ***urism of the pro***nce.
It is estimat*** that by 1995, Yunnan will receive about 200, 000 ***urists annually and by 2000, their number will rise *** 320, 000. Hotels by then ***uld h**e a***ommodation f*** 10,000 people.
To ***et the ******s of ***urism, appropriate ***asures are be***g taken *** various aspects, Miao said.

In April 1988, a centre was set up pro***d***g ***rt-term professional tra******g f*** three *** five months f*** employees *** ***urist depart***nts. All th'e big hotels h**e their own tra******g section, aim***g at improv*** ser***ce. Seven young employees h**e been sent *** the Unit*** States *** learn manage***nt expertise. Dozens of chefs are *** Hong Kong *** learn various styles of cuis***e. And so*** young employees are sent *** ***llege *** learn f***eign languages as well as professional skills *** ***urism, Miao said.

4. Advantages of Yunnan *** Develop Tourism

A******d***g *** the pub***city chief of the pro***ncial ***urism bure***, Chen Keq***, on the strength of its dist***ctive geograph*** and ethn*** features, Yunnan has the follow***g advantages f*** the develop***nt of ***urism :
A ***od number of scen*** wonders. They are roughly locat*** *** three areas. First, those *** the area centr***g around Kunm***g, of wh***h the S****** F***est is o***. The spectacular, jagg*** rocky f***mations that rear their heads *** the skies are w***n***g w***ld fa***. There are also karst c**es *** this area.

Se***nd, those *** west Yunnan with the two ancient cities Da*** and I.ijiang. The Tiger-leap***g G***ge of the J***sha River deserves a ***ntion. It is 16 kilo***;res long. The narrowest section of it is about 30 ***tres wide, wh***h, legend claims, tigers once leapt across. F***m the surface of the river *** the ***p of the precipi***us mounta***s on the two sides, the height is 3,900 ***tres. With*** the 16-kilo***tre length of the ***rge, there are 18 risky rapids and *** so ***rt a distance, the drop of the water is 210 ***tres, **erag***g 14 ***tres f*** each kilo***tre. The ***rge resounds with the roar***g and dash***g of huge w**es of the rac***g water.

Third, Xishuangbanna Prefecture *** south Yunnan. With its lush trop***al f***ests, the area has many fasc***at***g features, *** both natural sce***ry and cu***ural ***fe.
Genial c***mate, with all the year mild and spr***g***ke. The **erage annual temperature is 19.3 degrees Centigrade. As a resu***, the pro***nce is a "k***gdom of f***na and fl***a", with a variety of rare animals and birds, such as elephants, snub-nos*** monkeys and pea***cks, and tens of thousands of varieties of plants.
R***h local *** special products. They ***clude f***e ***ba***o, tea, ham, ***d******al herbs, marble hand***raft art***les and the Yunnan baiyao, a ***d******e f*** haem***rhag***g and wounds.

Folk cus***ms. Inhabit*** by 24 m******ities, Yunnan has many national folk cus***ms, festivals, traditions, dances, ***stu***s and houses that are of great ***terest. F*** ***stance, the water splash***g festival *** April, with dra***n boat regatta, of the Dai people *** Xishuangbanna and the ***rch festival *** July, of a few m******ities ***clud***g the Yis, Bais and Sanis, are two of the most famous annual celebrations.

With such a variety of th***gs *** see *** Yunnan, ***urist parties with special. purposes h**e been ***ganiz***. F*** ***stance, there are parties *** see the azalea looms of all types *** various places: mounta*** c***mb***g; the folk cus***ms of the n***ities; *** walk***g ***urs through scen*** routes.
However, a******d***g *** the deputy direc***r of Kunm***g ***urism bure***, Peng Shaoxi, there are h***drances *** Yunnan's tqurism.

Woefully ***adequate transp***tation faci***ties. F***eign ***urists often f***d it hard *** get ****** Yunnan, while those who are le*****g are often strand*** at Kunm***g's airp***t f*** lack of f***ghts.It often takes 10 days *** f***ish a trip *** Xishuangbanna, ***o long f*** most ***urists.

5. Good Impression about Ch***a

Edi***r:
Last May, my wife and I ********* Beij***g, the capital of your be***tiful ***untry, and attend*** the Fourth W***ld ***nference on ***nt***u***g Eng***eer***g Education. We receiv*** a warm wel****** everywhere we went. ***mb******g bus***ess and pleasure, we ********* many areas of the city and ***t quite a few citizens. from all walks of ***fe.
From our ******, we know that Ch***a is a great ***untry; we know that the Ch***ese people are warm and friendly; we know that Beij***g is much safer than most USAn cities. We h**e ***ld all our friends about our wonderful experiences. In a few years, we hope *** return *** Ch***a and teach f*** a se***ster.

Unf***tunately, the USAn people do not see your ***untry as we did. Our tele***sion ***dia does not ***nvey the warm hospita***ty of the people. Our ***wspapers do not rep***t the steady modernization of the past 10 years, n*** do they ***ntion the ***nt***u***g ***crease *** the standard
of ******ng. Sad *** say, the USAn pub***c th***ks of Ch***a as it was 40 years a***.
The solution *** my ***untry,s mistaken impressions about Ch***a is simple, but it will take ti***: ***nt***ue our open do*** relations; ***nt***ue our e***nom*** trade; most especially, en***urage USAns *** ****** Ch***a and experience her friendship and charm!

6. Fond Mem***ies of a Trip *** India

At least tw***e I thought about gi***ng up my trip *** attend a ***nference on ***unse***ng *** India last month. The first ti*** was when it see***d I ***uld ***ver, ever get my ***sa *** India. The se***nd ti*** was after I had the ***sa and went fo buy my pla*** t***ket. There I lear***d the t***ket I had book*** was not **ailable bec***se of a ***mputer err***.
But I persever*** and I am glad, bec***se the trip tur***d out *** be n***e a***hough it was ***o ***rt f*** *** *** see much of lndia.

From the mo***nt we land*** at Bombay airp***t, we three wo***n from Beij***g were surround*** by the differences *** language, people, food, sce***s and even traff***-o*** drives on the right side of the road *** Ch***a but on the left side *** India.
It was a ***mpletely strange place, but I fe*** easy and safe.
The Indians we ***t were so friendly that when each of the part***ipants *** the ***nference was ******t*** *** say o*** th***g about the ***et***g, I said, "I am glad *** h**e this chance *** know you be***tiful Indian wo***n and hand'so*** Indian ***n."

I would not f***get the guard at the exit of the ***ternational airp***t *** Bombay who k***dly ***sist*** that we wait *** seats usually reserv*** f*** the guards bec***se the people who were suppos*** *** ***et us fail*** *** ***w up as expect***.
And when I want*** *** make a pho*** call *** get so***body *** p***k us up and ***uld get no ******s anywhere, another guard ***ok *** *** a pho*** reserv*** f*** airp***t staff .

It ***uld be a very frustrat***g experience *** miss o***'s f***ght and arrive at the dest***ation eight hours later than planri***, wh***h is what happe***d *** us after the ***nference.
But it tur***d out so***how not as frustrat***g as it might h**e been. We were at the ***imba***re airp***t on our way back *** Bombay after the ***nference, and we were *** le**e f*** ho*** from Bombay the ***xt even***g.

We were ***ld that we ***uld not take the 10 a. m. f***ght as we had plan***d bec***se our t***kets had not been ***nfir***d properly and there were no seats **ailable. But we were ***ld that we ***uld be *** Bombay that even***g if we ***ok a f***ght *** a ***arby airp***t *** Bangal***e and *** from there *** Bombay.
We were kil***ng ti*** by ***asur***g the airp***t's modest wait***g room when an airp***t off***er s***pp*** *** front of us, ***troduc*** himself as the off***er on duty at the airp***t, and assur*** us that there would be no problem, that th***gs would be straighte***d out f*** us, and everyth***g would be all right.
In, half an hour we had our ***w t***kets *** our hands.

Yet, bef***e long, we were call*** *** the t***ket ***unter and ***f******d that we would not be able *** catch our ***n***ction f***ght at the Bangal***e airp***t bec***se the f***ght from ***imba***re would be o*** ho*** late. And we would h**e *** take the ***xt f***ght le*****g Bangal***e and arri***ng *** Bombay at 8 p.m.
O*** hour later, wben I was th***k***g how u***ucky we were that day, we were ***n***g up f*** the security check. A young woman *** airp***t unif***m approach*** us and said, "We are so s***ry that we fail*** *** arrange your m***n***g f***ght. We did try, but..."

You don't hear such w***ds very often when you are upset by tr**el problems *** Ch***a, even when you are the ***ctims of the tr**el ser***ce's mistakes.
Her w***ds swept away my bitter fee***ngs at h*****g *** spenci. the whole day at airp***ts while we might h**e been expl******g Bombay f*** the afternoon.
And that was o*** of the several mo***nts when I ***uld not help but fall *** love with the Indian people.

I fell *** love with them ear***er when a taxi driver, a quiet old man, follow*** *** and g**e *** his dr***k***g water *** wash my mouth when I ***t s***k halfway *** the ***nference place.
I fell *** love with them when the children at the school close *** the ***nference build***g pass*** by and greet*** us with "hello" and "m***n***g" with smiles and a ***ttle shy***ss.

I fell *** love with them when the ***llege students *** Bombay, ***t***g on steps at the gate, w***** *** us cheerfully across the street.
Yes, I would love *** ****** India aga***. I want *** see the protect*** f***ests and the flowers bloom***g everywhere and the eharm***g, elegant wo***n *** ***lourful Saris aga***, and of ***urse, the India Air******s staff ***mbers, ***o.

And I want *** see no beggars along the streets, no slums alongside the be***tiful beach *** Bombay, no school-age boys ser***ng at the tables *** rest***rants, *** hear no ***w s***ries about young wives who are burnt *** death bec***se the dowry from their parents fail*** *** sati**y the husbands' fami***es.
And I hope India will see m***e Ch***ese *********s *** the ***ar future and Ch***a see m***e Indian *********s, ***o.
