At the ti***, he was hopeful that the war wouldn't last long and the sl**e ow***rs would be put down f***ever, but he underestimat*** how diff***u*** the war would be. It would be harder than any the USAns had thought bef***e *** s***ce, largely bec***se the n***th had *** break the will of the southern people, not just by its army. But L******ln ral****** n***ther***rs *** a deep ***mmit***nt *** the c***se. They ca*** *** perceive the war as a k***d of democrat*** crusade aga***st southern society.
